內裝型PLC有如下特點：

1）內裝型PLC實際上是CNC裝置帶有的PLC功能，一般是作為一種基本的或可選擇的功能提供給用戶。

2）內裝型PLC的性能指標（如：輸入／輸出點數，程序較大步數，每步執行時間、程序掃描周期、功能指令數目等）是根據所從屬的CNC系統的規格、性能、適用機床的類型等確定的。其硬件和軟件部分是被作為CNC系統的基本功能或附加功能與CNC系統其他功能一起統一設計、制造的。因此，系統硬件和軟件整體結構十分緊湊，且PLC所具有的功能針對性強，技術指標亦較合理、實用，尤其適用于單機數控設備的應用場合。

3）在系統的具體結構上，內裝型PLC可與CNC共用CPU，也可以單獨使用一個CPU；硬件控制電路可與CNC其他電路制作在同一塊印刷板上，也可以單獨制成一塊附加板，當CNC裝置需要附加PLC功能時，再將此附加板插裝到CNC裝置上，內裝PLC一般不單獨配置輸入／輸出接口電路，而是使用CNC系統本身的輸入／輸出電路；PLC控制電路及部分輸入／輸出電路（一般為輸入電路）所用電源由CNC裝置提供，不需另備電源。

4）采用內裝型PLC結構，CNC系統可以具有某些高級的控制功能。如：梯形圖編輯和傳送功能，在CNC內部直接處理NC窗口的大量信息等。

自70年代末以來，世界上著名的CNC廠家在其生產的CNC產品中，大多開發了內裝型PLC功能。隨著大規模集成電路的開發利用，帶與不帶PLC功能，CNC裝置的外形尺寸已沒有明顯的變化。一般來說，采用內裝型PLC省去了PLC與NC間的連線，又具有結構緊湊、可靠性好、安裝和操作方便等優點，和在擁有CNC裝置后，又去另外配購一臺通用型PLC作控制器的情況相比較，無論在技術上還是經濟上對用戶來說都是有利的。

國內常見的外國公司生產的帶有內裝型PLC的系統有：FANUC公司的FS-0（PMC-L／M），FS-0 Mate（PMC-L／M），FS-3（PLC-D），FS-6（PLC-A、PLC-B），FS-10／11（PMC-1）；FS-15（PMC-N）；Siemens公司的SINUMERIK 810，SINUMERIK 820；A-B公司的8200，8400，8600等。
